L’île des Démons

The image in this work is reproduced from a map made for André Thevost’s Cosmographie Universelle, 1575. Thevost was a French historian who wrote about the New World. In this book he told the story of Marguerite de Roberval, who was abandonned on an island in northern Quebec for having an affair and becoming pregnant on a voyage from France to what was then called New France.
