August the Sixteenth, 1984 is the first in a series of works that used flock and text on a large scale. August the Sixteenth, 1984 and the other works that made up this series – Mable K., Burns Lake, 1967, Dear Andy, and Untitled (1993) – were shown together in the exhibition Dead Letters that took place at YYZ in Toronto in 1998.
The text for August the Sixteenth, 1984 was commissioned from the artist Grace Rose Holyer.
